Donna drives change in dream role

For duty truck driver
Donna Cook, no two days are the same.

Of a morning, the City of
Greater Geelong employee of 15 years might attend to road and footpath
obstructions.

Of an afternoon, she might
install new signage and public seating.

It’s the variety of
maintenance work that attracted Donna to the job.

“There’s a little bit of
everything,” she smiles.

“That’s why I like it.”

Donna became the City’s
first permanent female duty truck driver in 2018 after more than a decade
working as a cleaner.

She made the most of
upskilling opportunities at the City, gaining many qualifications including
crane operation, first aid and heavy rigid truck licence.

Most recently, the
mother-of-four completed a basic welding course.

“I love what I’m doing
now,” Donna says.

“This is the best thing I
ever did.”

The City of Greater
Geelong is committed to creating a fair and equitable workplace for all employees,
including women.

Last year Council adopted
Ba-gurrk: A Gender Equity Framework for the City of Greater Geelong, the first
of its kind for our region.

The Framework addresses
gender equity as a governance, community and organisational issue and will
provide a guide to develop, implement and monitor actions.

Donna resonates with this
year’s theme for International Women’s Day – Each for Equal.

She hopes to see more
women working in maintenance roles, just like her.

After all, she knows
first-hand women are more than capable.

“Just do it,” Donna says.

To mark International
Women’s Day, the City of Greater Geelong is sharing personal messages from
employees on our social media channels.
