One of Donnybrook’s oldest precincts is now its newest destination, with the South-West town’s revitalised goods shed and surrounds officially open.
Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan today joined Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns, representatives from the Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup and the local community to celebrate the completed Donnybrook Heritage Goods Shed Interpretive Centre and Station Square.
A $2 million McGowan Government contribution has breathed new life into the State heritage-listed goods shed, which has been restored and now houses an interpretive centre which tells the story of Donnybrook.
A commercial opportunity has also been created through the project, to offset the Shire’s recurrent operating costs of the facility.
Local food and beverage business ‘Park Donnybrook’ will operate from within the centre and be responsible for the day-to-day management of the facility.
Other enhancements to the railway precinct include the establishment of new boardwalks, which better connect the east and west areas of the town, providing linkages between Collins Street and the central business district.
The Station Square area has been landscaped, making the area an even better place for locals and visitors, close to the Apple Fun Park which is in the process of being refreshed.
The Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup carried out the revitalisation, working with mostly South-West based contractors including Perkins Builders which delivered the project from designs by MCG Architects.
As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
“The Donnybrook Heritage Goods Shed Interpretive Centre and Station Square creates a fresh experience for this beautiful town, enhancing the experience for locals and visitors alike and building new social and economic opportunities.
“If you’ve visited in the past, the rejuvenation of the Donnybrook historic railway precinct provides a reason to rediscover this South-West town and enjoy what this very pretty and engaging town has to offer.
“Congratulations to the team from the Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup and all who have worked on this project to make it a reality.”
