Council has start work on improving parking and pedestrian safety at Broken Head this week (from Monday 5 September 2022).

This includes Broken Head Reserve Road and Seven Mile Beach Road.

Broken Head is popular with locals and visitors with an average of 1,880 vehicles a week travelling on Broken Head Reserve Road.

The traffic on the road has increased substantially in recent years and residents have raised concerns with Council about pedestrian safety, parking, and speeding.

In late 2020 Council asked the community for feedback about parking and traffic and this information has been used to develop the Broken Head Reserve Road and Village Improvement project.

Stage one of the project involves:

  • Resurfacing approximately 230m of Broken Head Reserve Road. This includes sealing of angle carparking spaces.
  • Formalising on-street carparking spaces.
  • Installing timber bollards to separate cars and vehicles from pedestrians.
  • Building a pedestrian footpath.
  • Creating garden beds that will be planted with appropriate native vegetation.
  • Installing a small roundabout at the intersection of Broken Head Reserve Road and Seven Mile Beach Road.
  • Sealing Brays Beach and Whites Beach carparks.
  • Installing timber bollards and rocks on sections of Seven Mile Beach Road to stop people parking on the road.

Phil Holloway, Director Infrastructure Services, said the project centres on making the Broken Head village area and Seven Mile Beach Road safer and more user-friendly for everyone.

“Broken Head is a very busy place at different times, especially on the weekends and around Christmas and Easter and it is very obvious that something needs to be done to make parking and traffic more ordered,” Mr Holloway said.

As part of the project Council will be removing or pruning approximately 20 trees in front of some properties.

Council will be planting native trees and shrubs suitable for the Broken Head area in new garden beds that are part of this project.

Stage two of the project involves creating more parallel parking on Broken Head Reserve Road, as well as a new footpath and speed management devices.

Further parking improvements are planned for Seven Mile Beach Road in 2023.

Information about the Broken Head Reserve Road and Village Improvement project is on Council’s website.

Early works to utilities started in August and the roadwork will get underway in September and should be finished by the end of October, weather dependent.
