Tamworth Regional Council is appealing
to drivers to take the road safety pledge so others survive, as part of Yellow
Ribbon National Road Safety Week from 16 to 23 May 2021.
National Road Safety Week is an annual
initiative from Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group, partners in
road safety with the local, State and Federal government.
Transport for NSW Senior Manager, Community
and Place Michael Papadopoulos said that it is important that everyone remains
safe on our roads and there are practices we can all change to help.
“Keep your eyes on the road and not on
your phone, be aware of vulnerable road users and most importantly slow down.
Drive so others survive”, said Mr Papadopoulos.
Tamworth region Deputy Mayor Phil Betts
said that the public can help reduce fatal and casualty crashes by being aware
and changing your habits.
“Each year around 1,200 people are
killed and 44,000 are injured on Australian roads. It is not only the people
that lose their lives, it is the families that suffer.
“We have a large network of roads across
Tamworth, as the recent COVID restrictions have been eased, more people are now
coming into regional areas of NSW and we have seen a significant amount of
traffic coming in to Tamworth,” said Cr Betts.
For a limited time only, free coffee
vouchers will be handed out at the Tamworth Visitor Information Centre on The Ringers
Road, and are to be redeemed at the onsite café Strings and Beans.
