Driver charged following investigation into crash – Mayfield

A man has been charged following a two-car crash in Mayfield last week.

About 9am on Thursday 20 April 2023, police were called to Wye Street responding to reports of a two-car crash.

At the scene, police were told that a sedan and SUV collided, before the driver and passenger of the sedan exited the vehicle and allegedly fled the scene.

The driver of the SUV, a 54-year-old woman, was able to get out of the vehicle with minor injuries. She was taken to the John Hunter Hospital to be checked as a precaution.

During a search of the sedan, police located and seized a replica firearm, several knives, number plates, and credit cards suspected of being stolen.

Later that day, police from Newcastle City Police District attended an address on Hanbury Street, Mayfield, where they arrested a 18-year-old woman.

She was taken to Waratah Police Station where she was charged with two counts of possess prohibited drug.

She was granted conditional bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 11 May 2023.

About 6.30am yesterday (Wednesday 26 April 2023), officers from Newcastle City Police District attended an address on Hanbury Street, Mayfield, where they arrested a 31-year-old man, who is alleged to have been driving the sedan at the time of the crash.

He was taken to Waratah Police Station where he was charged with drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, dishonestly obtain property by deception, possess unauthorised pistol, goods in personal custody suspected of being stolen, and receiving stolen property.

He first appeared before Newcastle Local Court yesterday (Wednesday 26 April 2023), where he was formally refused bail to appear before the same court on Thursday 8 June 2023.
