Police have charged two people with drug related offences following an interception at Launceston Airport.
Yesterday members of Northern Drug Investigation Services and the Police Dog Handing Unit were conducting routine screening at Launceston Airport, of passengers arriving on a flight from Melbourne.
During screening a police drug detection dog made a positive indication on a male passenger who was subsequently searched, and 80grams of Methamphetamine was located. The drugs have an estimated street value of $80,000.
The 27-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman, both from Newnham, were taken into custody and detained whilst further investigations continued. The man was later charged with trafficking in a controlled substance and other minor offences whilst the woman was charged with minor drug offences, unlawful possession of property and possess ammunition.
Detective Inspector Craig Fox from Northern CIB said, “Tasmania Police remain committed to screening the air, sea and mail corridors into Tasmania for all illicit drugs”.
Both were bailed to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court at a later date.
