Drugs and firearms seized from remote property – Barkly Region

A cache of firearms and traffickable quantities of drugs have been uncovered on a remote property on the QLD and NT border in a joint operation at the weekend.

A search of the property by Detectives from Northern Territory and Queensland Police allegedly located ten firearms, a large quantity of ammunition, a deconstructed clandestine laboratory and traffickable quantities of Methamphetamine and Cannabis.

A 51-year-old man was arrested and transported to the Harts Range Police Station where he was charged with one count each of:

  • Possess Schedule 1 Drug – Traffickable Quantity
  • Possess Scheduled 2 Drug – Traffickable Quantity
  • Possess Scheduled 2 precursors
  • Possess articles used for manufacturing dangerous drug
  • Possess thing to administer drug
  • Possess category B firearm without licence
  • Possess prohibited firearm
  • Possess silencer
  • Possess ammunition
  • Fail to meet storage requirements

The man is scheduled to appear before the Alice Springs Local Court on June 9, 2020.

Two other occupants on the property were issued with Notices to Appear before the Alice Springs Local Court on drug related offences.

  • A 27-year-old woman for one count of Possess Scheduled 1 and 2 Drugs – Traffickable Quantity.
  • A 56-year-old man for one count of Possess Scheduled 1 and self-administer drug.

Southern Regional Investigations Superintendent, Joanne Foley said this successful seizure of firearms and drugs bound for vulnerable communities was a result of the excellent working relationship we have with Queensland Police.

“We will continue to work with other jurisdictions to successfully remove the illicit and harmful substances and drugs which have an enormous impact on our communities and towns.

“This operation is an excellent example of that work.”
