Duo charged after illegal hoon meet

Two men have been charged as part of the state-wide Operation Achilles following an illegal hoon driving event in Campbellfield last month.

The charges follow an illegal hoon meet that took place at Lara Way, Campbellfield on 8 June where a group of spectators watched on as cars performed burnouts on the road.

Highway patrol officers and local police from the North West Metro Region executed two search warrants this morning at different addresses in Thomastown, arresting two males.

These arrests were made as part of Operation Achilles, a state-wide operation launched in February this year to target hooning and other instances of intentional high risk driving.

A 20-year-old male was charged with reckless conduct endangering persons, careless driving, improper use of a motor vehicle, cause undue smoke and noise and driving offences.

A 19-year-old male was charged with reckless conduct endangering persons, incitement and statutory complicity.

Both men were bailed to appear at the Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on 28 March 2022.

The investigation into the illegal hoon meet remains ongoing and anyone with information is urged to report this to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

As part of Operation Achilles, investigators across the state are working together to reduce and disrupt hoon activity using shared intelligence to identify those responsible for organising hoon meets.

This intelligence is being used to task proactive patrols to identified hoon hotpots using a range of personnel from across the state, including officers from the Highway Patrol, Crime Investigation Units, Divisional Response Units and local general duties police. Specialist support from the Public Order Response Team is also utilised when required.

Where arrests are not made on the spot, police are continuing to thoroughly investigate in the aftermath of the event to ensure offenders are identified and charged where appropriate.
