A man has been charged with domestic violence and traffic offences after allegedly fleeing the scene of a crash in the state’s south yesterday.
About 1.30pm (Tuesday 3 May 2022), emergency services were called to Picton Road, Cordeaux, following reports a vehicle had crashed into a tree.
The driver and a passenger then allegedly left on foot.
Officers attached to Wollongong Police District – with assistance from Traffic and Highway Patrol, South East Region Enforcement Squad (RES), Southern Domestic Violence High Risk Offender Team (DVHROT), PolAir and the Dog Unit – commenced inquiries to locate the occupants, however, were unsuccessful.
Following inquiries, officers attached to the Southern DVHROT searched the utility on Picton Road, about 8.20am today (Wednesday 4 May 2022), where they located a man in the driver’s seat.
The 33-year-old was arrested and taken to Wollongong Police Station where he was charged with four offences:
- Assault occasioning actual bodily harm (domestic violence)
- Intentionally choke etc person without consent (domestic violence)
- Common assault (domestic violence), and,
- Drive motor vehicle during disqualification period – second offence.
It will be alleged in court that the man choked a woman known him at a unit in Corrimal Street, Wollongong, prior to crashing the utility.
The Wollongong man was refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court today (Wednesday 4 May 2022).
