Eighth man charged over drug syndicate between Sydney and Illawarra, NSW

An eighth man has been charged following an investigation into an alleged large-scale drug syndicate operating between the Illawarra and Sydney.

In May 2020, officers attached to the Lake Illawarra Police District established Strike Force Mote to investigate organised crime in the Illawarra region, with the assistance of the State Crime Command and the NSW Crime Commission.

Following extensive inquiries, just before midday yesterday (Wednesday 12 May 2021), police stopped a 26-year-old man on Weil Avenue, Croydon Park; allegedly in possession of $292,350 in cash.

A search of his vehicle allegedly revealed 147g of cocaine inside hidden compartments, with an estimated potential street value in excess of $40,000.

Officers then executed a search warrant at a property on Dutruc Street, Randwick, where investigators seized quantities of drugs, including substances believed to be MDMA and heroin; along with cash, money counters, mobile phones and fraudulent identification documentation.

The items, including the vehicle, will undergo forensic examination.

The man was taken to Campsie Police Station and charged with dealing with the proceeds of crime, and drug supply indictable quantity.

He was refused bail to appear at Bankstown Local Court today (Thursday 13 May 2021).

Seven more men remain before the courts.

Investigations under Strike Force Mote are continuing, and further charges are expected to be laid.
