Elderly woman defrauded by fake salesman, NSW

A man is due to appear in Wollongong court today charged with defrauding an elderly woman after allegedly posing as a salesman.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District were told an 86-year-old woman had her purse stolen about 1.30pm on Monday 10 February 2020, after she let a man, claiming to be a solar panel salesman, inside her Oak Flats home.

Police allege multiple fraudulent transactions were subsequently made on the woman’s bank account.

Following extensive inquiries, officers arrested a 30-year-old man on the M1 motorway at Gwynneville, about 5pm yesterday (Thursday 20 February 2020).

He was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he has now been charged with three counts of obtain financial advantage by deception.

The man, from Wilberforce, has been refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court later today (Friday 21 February 2020).
