Electoral Boundaries Commission releases State electoral boundaries Victoria’s Electoral Boundaries Commission (EBC) today released new State electoral boundaries to come into operation at the next State election in November 2022.
The EBC report, tabled in Parliament today, includes the boundaries of each State district and region, and an explanation of how and why each change was made.
The EBC took account of the 127 written and 25 verbal submissions received from the Victorian community when preparing the final boundaries, which led to several key changes from the proposed boundaries.
The changes have resulted in notable differences, including: a 4 way exchange in Gippsland, a return to 2 districts for the Ballarat urban area, and a reversion to the existing boundary between Albert Park and Prahran districts, with a minor variation.
Electoral Commissioner Warwick Gately, one of 3 members of the EBC, was pleased with the level of engagement in the process. ‘Redivisions are a key part of Victoria’s electoral system, as they ensure fair representation and an equal voice for all voters in State elections,’ Mr Gately said.
‘The EBC released proposed boundaries on Wednesday 30 June 2021 and invited public comment. After considering the written suggestions and objections and holding 2 public hearings, the EBC has amended the proposed boundaries in 38 areas, transferring 127,425 electors to different electoral districts.’
Comparing the existing boundaries with the new boundaries released today, a total of 910,384 electors (21.28% of all electors) have been transferred to different districts.
The redivision has also replaced 9 existing districts with 9 new ones.
