Electronics technician finds his calling in Navy

Department of Defence

For Electronics Technician Able Seaman Logan Coote, a career in Navy was always the goal.

After leaving school following Year 10 and spending a year working in carpentry with his father, Able Seaman Coote enlisted at 17.

He completed recruit and trade training at HMAS Cerberus, earning a Certificate III in Electronics and Communications.

Now serving in HMAS Eyre on his first posting, Able Seaman Coote helps maintain and repair the electronic systems that enable the ship to communicate, navigate and operate safely at sea.

“Modern warships depend on technology,” Able Seaman Coote said.

“Our job is to make sure the systems the crew rely on every day are available when they’re needed.”

Electronics technicians conduct maintenance, troubleshoot faults and restore critical systems, combining technical expertise with problem-solving and teamwork.

They play a vital role in keeping the ship operationally ready by ensuring essential electronic equipment remains reliable and ready for use.

‘The best part has been the lifelong friendships you make, the endless opportunities and unique experiences that come with being in the Navy.’

While life at sea can mean time away from home, Able Seaman Coote said staying connected with his family helps make deployment easier.

His wife, one-year-old son and German Shepherd puppy are never far from his thoughts when he’s underway.

“Being away can be challenging, but getting into a good routine on board and keeping in touch with my family and hearing what they’ve been up to keeps me motivated,” he said.

“It makes you appreciate the time you have together when you get home.”

Able Seaman Coote said the role offered valuable training, strong career opportunities and a rewarding sense of camaraderie.

“The best part has been the lifelong friendships you make, the endless opportunities and unique experiences that come with being in the Navy,” he said.

Currently undertaking his first sea deployment, Able Seaman Coote said he would encourage anyone considering a Navy career to explore the trade.

“It is a rewarding career that offers new challenges, opportunities to learn and grow, and the satisfaction of knowing that the work you do plays a vital role in keeping Navy systems operating effectively,” he said.

For Able Seaman Coote, serving in Navy provides not only adventure, but also the opportunity to work with advanced technology while building a future for his young family.

“I’d definitely recommend becoming an electronics technician,” he said.

“I’ve learnt so much already, and there are plenty of opportunities to develop your skills and challenge yourself.”

Electronics technicians play a vital role in keeping Navy ships capable, connected and mission-ready while gaining nationally recognised qualifications, hands-on experience and the opportunity to work with advanced technology.
