Emergency care of prisoners in Australia

NSW Gov

Earlier this year, Justice Health NSW Executive Medical Director Dr Stephen Hampton was approached by the Emergency Medicine Australasia for his expertise on providing health care to patients in custody.

Dr Hampton joined Justice Health NSW in 2009 as a general practitioner and Clinical Director for Primary and Women’s Health, before becoming Executive Medical Director in 2012.

He leads a team of health care professionals responsible for providing medical services (appointments, compliance, education, and training), expert advice on medical policy and procedures, research, pharmacy, and professional development, including for junior medical doctors and registrars.

“The people who enter custody are a traumatised and vulnerable group with high prevalence of mental illness, substance use disorders and physical conditions.”
