Emergency crews responding to fire in Smithfield Plains, South Australia

Police are investigating a fire at Smithfield Plains, where a vacant school has been set alight early this morning.

Just after 12.30am, Sunday 8 December, police and MFS were called to Coventry Road after reports of a fire at the old Smithfield High School.

Up to 12 MFS and CFS crews attended to fight the blaze on the second storey of one of the old classroom blocks. The fire was brought under control, but it continued to burn for several hours.

Coventry and Beaumont Roads were closed for to all traffic while emergency services crews were at the scene but reopened at 6am.

Fire Cause Investigators will attend to examine the scene this morning, with the fire currently being treated as suspicious.
