Enjoy high-quality, sustainable WA seafood this Easter

  • From our tropical north to temperate south, WA fishing is world-class
  • WA seafood amongst the most sustainable in the world
  • Recreational fishers should avoid risky weather or ocean conditions this Easter
  • Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly is urging Western Australians to seek out and enjoy some seafood this Easter, and support the commercial fishers who play their part in gathering high-quality seafood for local and export markets where our reputation is highly regarded.

Western Australia is committed to world-class fisheries management and the sharing of aquatic resources, our fisheries are amongst the most sustainable in the world.

WA’s Western Rock Lobster Fishery was the very first fishery in the world to be independently certified through the international Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and has held its certification for almost 20 years.

Other WA fisheries with MSC certification are Exmouth Gulf and Shark Bay prawns, crabs and sea mullet from Peel-Harvey, along with deep sea crabs, pearl oyster and abalone.

WA has a highly diverse range of marine and freshwater ecosystems and our aquatic resources support more than 40 commercial fisheries, plus a range of aquaculture ventures.

A new landmark study this year has also recently revealed that one-third of all Western Australians go fishing – making it vital that our fisheries remain well-managed to deliver enjoyable recreational fishing experiences to locals and tourists alike.

Expected weather and ocean conditions this Easter will mean recreational fishers are advised to keep safety top of mind and not take unnecessary risks.

As stated by Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly:

“Western Australians should be proud of the way our State’s aquatic resources are managed – management that is highly regarded internationally.

“The McGowan Government is also working to expand WA’s aquaculture opportunities, to help develop new businesses, create more jobs and take advantage of our pristine environment, disease-free status and research expertise to help meet the rising global demand for seafood.

“I urge Western Australians to seek out WA seafood from their local retailers or restaurants and be confident that you are supporting an industry and fishers who take sustainability seriously.

“And, if you are going fishing yourself this Easter, take account of the weather where you’re fishing and take all the important safety considerations if you’re out and about this weekend.”
