Environment commitment strengthened

Rockhampton Regional Council last week amended a key policy to ensure environmental sustainability continues to be a priority.

Council’s Environment Spokesperson, Councillor Drew Wickerson, said the support around the table for the updated policy showed just how strong Council’s commitment was.

“All of Council’s policies need to be periodically reviewed and updated. Since the Environmental Sustainability Policy was last amended over three years ago Council has really doubled down when it comes to this issue.

“Environment has become a key theme within our Corporate and Operational Plans, we have adopted a new Environmental Sustainability Strategy and established the Sustainable Rockhampton Investment Fund.”

Councillor Wickerson said although it might just seem like a minor bureaucratic process, the update is actually very important.

“Policies help to set Council’s direction and are what we refer to when deciding how to do things across the organisation and in the community.

“By updating this policy we are essentially making sure that environmental considerations are embedded in Council activities across all departments.

“We are saying that Council has stepped up when it comes to this issue and it’s right that we should put down – in writing – that it should feature in the planning and execution of everything we do.

“We recognise that we must take care of our environment, so our environment can continue to take care of us both now and in the future.”
