Evade and arrest at Gordonvale, QLD

Five people have been arrested after police converged on Gordonvale near Cairns this afternoon in response to a stolen car allegedly being driven at high speed.

At around 2pm a red Jeep Cherokee taken during a burglary at Mooroobool on March 20 failed to stop for police as it travelled along the Bruce Highway at Euramo.

It is further alleged at around 3.10pm the vehicle was driven dangerously on the Bruce Highway through South Innisfail, overtaking multiple cars across double white lines and proceeding through a red light.

Police continued to track the Jeep as it travelled towards Cairns at high speed.

A tyre deflation device was deployed by Babinda officers in the vicinity of Telecom Road however was unsuccessful.

With aerial assistance police were able to continue to monitor the Jeep as it travelled at speed onto Mulgrave River Bridge where officers deployed a second set of stingers.

The vehicle’s tyres were stung and it came to an abrupt stop in the middle of the Bruce Highway at Gordonvale where five occupants allegedly fled the scene.

The highway was closed as the dog squad, CIB and specialist police pursued on foot through dense terrain where five people were taken into custody.

Four teenage boys were transported to Cairns Watchhouse while another boy was taken to Cairns Hospital for treatment to a dog bit he sustained during the chase.

The five boys all aged between 16 and 17 are currently assisting with inquiries.

Investigations are continuing.
