Explosive safely detonated, NSW

Bomb disposal experts have successfully detonated a mortar in Sydney’s east today.

About midday (Friday 21 February 2020), officers from Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command were called to a building on Reina Street, North Bondi, after the mortar was found.

Police and Australian Defence Force bomb disposal experts transported the explosive, believed to be from the World War II period, to an open area on Manion Avenue, Rose Bay.

They established a 300-metre exclusion zone and evacuated residents in the area.

Just before 6pm, bomb disposal experts safely and successfully detonated the device.

An exclusion zone is no longer in place and residents have been allowed to return to their homes.

NSW Police would like to thank Woollahra Council, Woollahra Golf Club and The Royal Sydney Gold club for their assistance.
