Expressions of Interest are now open for local young people aged 12 to 25 interested in joining Mildura Rural City Council’s Youth Council.

The Youth Council will act as an advisory and advocacy committee representing the voice of young people who live, work or study in our region.

The goals of the Youth Council are to:

  • Provide opportunities for young people to have their say and influence Council policies, plans and strategies
  • Promote young people as valuable citizens who make a positive contribution to the community
  • Provide opportunities for young people to develop leadership skills
  • Provide the opportunity for Councillors to meet, hear and learn from young people
  • Provide opportunities for young people to consult with the wider community.

Nine Youth Councillors will be appointed for a one-year term, with the group to also elect a Youth Mayor and Youth Deputy Mayor.

Councillor for Community Health and Wellbeing Troy Bailey said the Youth Council represented a great opportunity for young people to have more of a say on matters that mean the most to them.

“Just like the Council itself, the Youth Council will meet regularly to discuss issues relevant to our region’s youth, debate policy and strategies, and advocate on the issues and projects young people are passionate about,” he said.

“I encourage any young person interested in making a difference in their community to put their name forward.”

Council’s Youth Engagement Service staff will provide support to the Youth Council, assisting with the preparation and development of documents, policy research and development, event planning and other duties.

Youth Councillors will also be provided with opportunities to attend various training and professional development sessions throughout their term.

Interested young people aged between 12 and 25 must complete an Expression of Interest form and provide a referee before 5pm on Friday 28 July 2023, before undertaking an interview.
