Expressions of interest open for Georges River Council’s Multicultural Advisory Committee

Georges River Council

Georges River Council is calling for passionate individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse communities to apply for membership of the Multicultural Advisory Committee for a two-year term of 2024 and 2025.

This committee is instrumental in ensuring that the diverse voices of our region are heard and considered in Council’s plans, policies, and decision-making.

Expressions of Interest (EOIs) should outline applicants’ community background, relevant experience, and their vision for the committee. Applications close 31 January 2024.

Georges River Council Mayor Sam Elmir said the role and objectives of the Advisory Committee were to act as a “vital link” between Council and multicultural communities; provide direction, advice, and feedback on strategic matters, policies, and services impacting these communities; to facilitate communication and consultation with communities; and to celebrate cultural diversity in Georges River.

“We’re seeking individuals who are committed to enhancing our community’s cultural diversity and inclusiveness,” Mayor Elmir said.

“Georges River is a vibrant tapestry of cultures and global heritage. In 2021, 46% of our residents were born overseas, making ours a region that is distinguished by its diversity.

“Our commitment to diversity is not just about statistics; it’s about recognising and valuing the unique contributions of everyone. When we listen to and incorporate the diverse experiences and insights of our residents, we create policies and plans that are more innovative, inclusive, and effective. This approach fosters a sense of belonging and strengthens our social fabric.

“In Georges River, every voice matters, and we are dedicated to ensuring that every member of our community feels heard, respected, and valued. Your involvement in this committee will help us ensure that our decisions truly reflect the needs and aspirations of us all.

“Inclusivity isn’t just beneficial; it’s essential for the harmonious and prosperous development of our area. Local government is the closest tier of government to the people and it’s essential that it is representative of the diverse perspectives and interests of all of the community members it serves.”

Multicultural Advisory Committee membership is open to individuals with a connection with the Georges River local government area who represent a broad range of identities, including ethnicity, culture, faith, age, ability, gender, and sexual orientation.

Advisory Committee members will be able to collaborate with Council on policies and projects for the betterment of multicultural communities, and collaborate with community organisations and Council to promote social cohesion.

Membership requires participation in an orientation workshop and quarterly meetings via Microsoft Teams.
