Extra bin collections for Christmas and New Year

There will be extra wheelie bin collections in the Byron Shire again this year.

For two weeks from Monday 27 December to Friday 7 January all wheelie bins can be put out weekly for collection.

This includes red, yellow and green bins for urban households and red and yellow bins for rural households.

People should put their bins out the night before their normal collection day and make sure the lid of the bin is closed.

“We would really appreciate it if the bins could be taken in as soon as possible because some of our streets are narrow and it gets quite congested,” Sarah Child, Waste Education Projects Officer, said.

“We have been providing extra bin collections for several years now, recognising that there is a lot more waste and recycling at this time of year.

“Rather than have the bins overflowing and rubbish spilling onto the streets and getting blown away or washed into drains and waterways Council puts on the extra collection services which seem to work well,” she said.

“Seeing the amount of waste going to landfill at this time of year is confronting and I am hoping people will take up the challenge of having a more sustainable Christmas.

“One of the best ways to reduce waste is to reuse. Wrap gifts in newspaper or material, shop for presents at second-hand shops and avoid single-use items like cutlery, cups and plastic bags,” Ms Child said.

Information about the extra bin collections and the opening hours of the Byron Resource Recovery Centre at Myocum is on Council’s website.

The Byron Resource Recovery Centre will be closed on from 25 December – 28 December and 1 January – 3 January.
