Moreland City Council joined local traders and residents today at Bonwick Street in Fawkner to celebrate the official beginning of exciting upgrades to the popular shopping strip.
Streetscape improvement works will include a new pedestrian crossing, upgrades to footpaths and new lighting to give priority to pedestrians and improve safety, along with new street furniture, garden beds and trees for the local community to enjoy.
Bike parking hoops will support active transport to the centre and the works will also include treatments to two laneways, enhancing pedestrian connections from Bonwick Street through to existing facilities.
Moreland Mayor Cr Natalie Abboud said the works will provide a wonderful new community hub.
“Over the last 12 months we’ve been consulting with the local Fawkner community to come up with a final design that will not only improve the local area but create a great space for our community to enjoy,” Cr Abboud said.
“Shopping strips like Bonwick Street add so much character to our municipality and are often the heart of a suburb and this is why we’re prioritising projects like this.”
The works will also promote the benefits of water sensitive urban design.
“Council have been able to achieve environmentally responsible outcomes by including raingardens to treat storm water run-off thanks to grant funding from Melbourne Water,” said Cr Abboud.
Council joined local traders, residents and students from Fawkner Secondary College at a celebration event, with works commencing next week.
The project is expected to be completed in November 2019.
