Final call for sporting nominations

Port Macquarie-Hastings

The deadline to nominate a sports star for a Port Macquarie Hastings Sports Awards or the Mayors Sporting Scholarship is fast approaching.

With nominations closing on September 30, Port Macquarie Hastings Council and the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise are issuing a final call for names of competitors and volunteers who have made an impact in their chosen sports over the last two years.

Up to $7,000 in prizes are on offer across 9 categories, and there is a major opportunity for local athletes to be recognised, and receive funding to help them achieve their elite sporting dreams.

The organising Committee are excited to reveal that the winners will be announced by social media this year.

Jenny Sinclair, Sports Awards Committee Chair said that the nominees for each category will be publicised via social media and on both Council’s and Rotary’s website from 10 October.

“Moving to the online platforms allows us to be creative with videos and interviews with category winners.

The major announcements of 2021 Sports Person of the Year and recipient of the Mayor’s Sporting Fund Scholarship will be made on Friday 22 October.

“We would have loved to get together for our annual breakfast Awards event, but due to COVID restrictions this will not be possible. In these times, it is more important than ever to bring some positivity and good news and recognise our local sporting champions”.

For the first time, the nomination period covers all sporting activity and achievements across a 2-year period from October 1, 2019 to September 30, 2021, as the event was not held in 2020 under the previous COVID-19 restrictions.

Mayor Peta Pinson said she is glad that the achievements of our talented community members over the last 2 years can still be celebrated, albeit through a different means.

“Our willingness to come together to uplift one another time and time again through challenging periods shows our community’s resilience, and this, as well as our achievements are worth celebrating.”

“I’m looking forwards to the announcements, and encourage any talented sports star who isn’t already in the running to put their name in the hat for a chance to accelerate their careers. All the best to those in the running,” said Mayor Pinson.
