Greater Shepparton residents are being reminded to register for this Saturday’s Detox Your Home event, a free and safe way to dispose of unwanted household chemicals that should not be placed in kerbside bins or poured down sinks.
The Victorian Government’s yearly Detox your Home events are free and help residents safely dispose of hazardous household chemicals that may be stored in sheds, garages, cupboards and under kitchen sinks, helping to protect local families, waterways, wildlife and the environment.
Many everyday products found around the home can be harmful if disposed of incorrectly, including weed killers, pesticides, bleach, brake fluid and rat poison. Common chemicals accepted at Detox Your Home events include:
- Cleaning – Acids and alkalis, including bleach, rust remover, and hydrochloric acid, oven cleaner
- Garden – Fertiliser, fuel (old lawn mower/power tools fuel), weed killers/herbicides, insect sprays and pesticides, pool chemicals
- Garage – Brake fluid, coolant, fuels including petrol, diesel and kerosene, machine oil and lubricant.
Council’s Director Infrastructure, Aidin Montazami, encouraged residents to take advantage of the upcoming event.
“This Saturday’s Detox Your Home event is an excellent opportunity for residents to clear out old or unused chemicals that may be sitting around the home,” he said.
“Not only does safe disposal protect the environment, it also helps create safer homes by removing potentially harmful products that are no longer needed.”
Detox your Home events are staffed by expert chemists who identify and sort the chemicals for safe transport back to a licensed facility in Melbourne where they are processed for reuse or safe disposal.
Detox your Home no longer collects paint, cosmetics or oils, including cooking oil.
