Final chance to nominate a Stroke Care Champion

Time is running out to nominate an inspirational health professional, working in the field of stroke, for the 2021 Stroke Care Champion Award.

The award recognises exceptional dedication to helping people with stroke recover and thrive.

Nominations close on Monday July 12, 2021.

Stroke Society of Australasia President Professor Bernard Yan said there are many dedicated individuals across the country who are making a difference in stroke prevention, treatment or care.

“More than 27,400 first time strokes are expected in Australia this year,” Professor Yan said.

“We wish to highlight the efforts of health professionals who go above and beyond on a daily basis to help survivors of stroke to live well and to thrive into the future.”

The Stroke Care Champion Award is supported by the Stroke Society of Australasia in conjunction with the Stroke Foundation. Nominees will need to have demonstrated a long-term commitment to stroke of at least five years.

Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer Sharon McGowan encouraged people to nominate their peers or colleagues who are role models for others.

“We want to celebrate the individuals whose expertise, commitment, progressive thinking and leadership are instrumental in improving outcomes for people with stroke and their families,” Ms McGowan said.

“2021 is the International Year of Health and Care Workers and we know there are many inspiring stroke clinicians out there whose contributions help reduce the burden of the disease on the community.”

Past nominees and winners for the Stroke Care Champion Award have included neurologists, stroke nurses, occupational therapists, speech therapists and researchers.

The winner of the Stroke Care Champion Award will be announced at the 30th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Stroke Society of Australasia in Perth in October. The winner will be provided with support for professional development.
