Final consultation underway on new Subregional Land Use Plan

NT Government

The Territory Labor Government is investigating key land parcels to support further population growth.

Over the next five years $15 million will be invested in planning works for population and industry growth. This includes making more than 5000 new residential lots available for the creation of new suburbs.

To make sure we have positive growth which keeps up with demand, the Northern Territory Planning Commission has, through two stages of community and stakeholder consultation, prepared the final draft of the Holtze to Elizabeth River Subregional Land Use Plan (HESLUP) .

The Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics is now considering whether to include the Subregional Plan in the NT Planning Scheme and is seeking public comment. This is a statutory process under the Planning Act 1999.

This is the third of a three-stage process to develop a subregional land use plan for the wider area including Greater 11 Mile, Greater Holtze, Virginia South-West, Archer and Mitchell West.

Consultation will run until Friday 15 April 2022 and is an opportunity for the community to provide feedback on the final draft of the land use plan.

The HESLUP will be a plan for the long-term, identifying and confirming strategic corridors for main roads, rail and utilities, and shaping the pattern of future land uses.

Key aspects of the final draft HESLUP include:

Infrastructure to support the projected increase in population, including areas earmarked for residential and rural living opportunities;Opportunities to protect the environment and recreational value, including the remnant pine forest at Howard Springs North for open space and recreational activities;Relocation option of the rail network and Darwin Passenger Rail Terminal to better support industry development; andCorridors for main roads, including identifying and preserving corridors out to Glyde Point and South to Weddell as required.
