Around 100 Bayside residents rolled up their sleeves yesterday for National Tree Day, helping to plant 1,000 native seedlings along the new M6 cycleway through Scarborough Park.
The community planting event has strengthened native habitat, increased Bayside’s urban tree canopy and enhanced biodiversity along one of the area’s newest active transport corridors. The seedlings will provide food and shelter for local wildlife and contribute to greener, healthier public spaces for years to come.
Families, local community groups and residents of all ages took part, including experienced gardeners, conservation volunteers and first-time participants. Mayor Edwar McDougall joined Councillors and community volunteers, helping to plan seedlings and show support for local efforts to care for Bayside’s environment.
The event also offered an opportunity to spend time outdoors, connect with nature and meet other community members. Council provided the equipment, including gloves and tools, along with light refreshments, helping make the day accessible and welcoming for everyone involved.
