Final pipe in place for Northern Midlands Irrigation Scheme

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

Construction of the Northern Midlands Irrigation Scheme’s pipeline network is now complete, marking a major milestone for one of Tasmania’s most significant agricultural infrastructure projects.

The scheme is now one step closer to delivering reliable irrigation water to farming communities across the region.

More than 150 km of underground pipeline will deliver 25,500 megalitres, or 25.5 billion litres, of reliable irrigation water each year.

Once operational, the scheme will supply water to the farming districts of:

  • Ross
  • Campbell Town
  • Conara
  • Barton
  • Macquarie
  • Lower Isis Valley.

The scheme is expected to deliver lasting benefits across the region by providing farmers with a reliable water supply. This will enable:

  • greater certainty
  • support business investment
  • help secure the future of farming enterprises.

Greater water security will help producers continue growing the premium food and fibre for which Tasmania is known. It will also help farmers manage seasonal conditions and respond to changing climates.

The benefits will extend beyond the farm gate. The project is expected to contribute around $54 million to the Tasmanian economy each year. This boost will support regional growth and strengthen local businesses.

With pipeline installation now complete, the project will move into its next phase. Commissioning works will begin alongside preparations for the first water deliveries.

This milestone brings Tasmania’s agricultural sector one step closer to a stronger and more secure future.
