Fireworks set to dazzle during Summer Sundays

Fireworks will set the night aglow during the 2022 Summer Sundays series.

Ballarat City Council last night voted to hold a firework display during the four-week January music festival.

A MySay survey was launched on Council’s website to gauge the community’s preference on an annual fireworks or sound and a light show, plus a potential date.

Survey responses showed:

  • 64.8% preferred fireworks
  • 20.5% preferred a sound and light show
  • 14.7% preferred no show.

(The approximate cost for the current fireworks display is $38,000 while a sound and light show would be $200,000.)

Response to the preferred scheduling showed:

  • 45.4% preferred summer
  • 26.1% preferred the Begonia Festival
  • 15.1% preferred the Christmas period
  • 7.5% preferred no show
  • 5.8% preferred Ballarat Harmony Fest

City of Ballarat Mayor Cr Daniel Moloney said Council had listened to its residents, who had voiced their opinion through the MySay survey.

“There was clear support for fireworks over a sound and light show or no show at all, and there was also a very clear indication that our ratepayers preferred a summer event, so we have tied the fireworks in to one of the Summer Sunday music sessions,” Cr Moloney said.

“Summer Sundays have always been one of the most popular events on our January calendar and to add in a fireworks display will add enormously to its family atmosphere.

“We also have the option of value-adding to this event through such things as night markets to provide a really spectacular entertainment occasion that all of Ballarat can enjoy.

In 2022, the Summer Sundays series will be held on 9, 16, 23 and 30 January. The fireworks will be held on one of these nights, with the final date to be confirmed in coming weeks.
