- Henry Lockyer appointed as first Co-Chair of the Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committee
- Appointment reflects the Cook Labor Government’s commitment to genuine partnership with Aboriginal people and communities
The Cook Labor Government has appointed respected community leader Henry Lockyer as the first Co-Chair of the Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committee (AJAC).
AJAC provides cultural advice and guidance to the Department of Justice on matters affecting Aboriginal people and communities across Western Australia.
As Co-Chairs of AJAC, Mr Lockyer and the Department’s Director General Kylie Maj will oversee the Committee’s work in advising the Attorney General and the Corrective Services Minister on Aboriginal justice policy, priorities, and outcomes.
Until now, the Department’s Director General has been the sole chair of the Committee.
Mr Lockyer has served as the AJAC member connected to the Pilbara region since May 2023.
He brings extensive experience in community consultation, Aboriginal community-controlled service delivery, governance, and culturally informed engagement across the Pilbara.
Mr Lockyer’s appointment marks an important milestone in strengthening Aboriginal engagement in decision-making.
As stated by Attorney General Dr Tony Buti:

“His appointment as the first Co-Chair of AJAC reflects the Cook Labor Government’s commitment to genuine partnership with Aboriginal people and communities.
“The Co-Chair model will help ensure Aboriginal voices are heard and included in the development of policies, programs, and services that affect Aboriginal people.
“His strong connections across the Pilbara will be invaluable as we continue working to improve justice outcomes and deliver on our Closing the Gap commitments.”
