First stage of works on Mooloolaba Transport Corridor Upgrade completed early

The first milestone in the Mooloolaba Transport Corridor Upgrade (MTCU) has been reached two months ahead of schedule, with the extension of Naroo Court through to Muraban Street now complete and open to the public.

Originally anticipated for completion by late 2019, stage 1a was the essential first step in the four-year MTCU project which will see Sunshine Coast Council upgrade Walan Street and Brisbane Road (south of Walan Street to Tuckers Creek Bridge) to four traffic lanes, with provision for future mass transit.

Division 4 Councillor John Connolly said stage 1a works included a new roundabout at the Naroo Court and Muraban Street intersection, new road, kerb, footpaths, new line marking, including on-street parking, a major stormwater upgrade and new landscaping.

“I am so pleased to see these works finished early thanks to the efficiency of the construction contractor, the project team and the essential cooperation of residents,” Cr Connolly said.

“I thank those impacted for their patience and support.

“We are now preparing to start stage 1b construction in February 2020.

“This stage will see Walan Street upgraded to four lanes of traffic between Venning Street and Smith Street, with completion anticipated by December 2020.

“The MTCU is part of a major transport infrastructure investment in Mooloolaba and will create a more integrated and inviting experience for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and public transport users.

“MTCU is one of many Mooloolaba projects council is investing in to create a world-class destination for our residents and visitors to enjoy.”

Project stages and scheduled timeframes are subject to weather, site conditions, council’s budget process and other funding.
