First Stage Works for George Treloar Memorial

The City of Ballarat will begin the process of installing the George Treloar Memorial in the Sturt Street gardens, with the positioning of a 3-tonne plinth on Wednesday, 21 August.

The delicate operation is expected to take around two hours and will require one lane of Sturt Street to be closed to traffic from 9.30am between Drummond and Raglan Streets on the south side.

The City of Ballarat anticipates the road to be fully open by midday, however because of the nature of the project, a permit is in place until 3:30pm to allow for any unforeseen delays.

The crane lift to position the plinth is scheduled to take place from 10.30am.

The life-size public artwork of local humanitarian George Devine Treloar, is the first statue created by a female artist and the first new major artwork for the gardens in almost 10 years.

The piece by Melbourne artist, Lis Johnson, is being located by the Sturt and Errard Street intersection and features a statue of Mr Treloar alongside an image of a Greek refugee child.

The final artwork is expected to arrive in early September.
