Police quickly had offenders in their sights after an alleged car theft in Māngere Bridge early this morning.
Initial reports were received about a vehicle being taken from outside an address on Scott Avenue around 3.10am.
Counties Manukau West Relieving Area Commander, Inspector Ross Ellwood, says a Police unit patrolling nearby was promptly on scene.
“The vehicle alleged to be stolen in the incident was seen entering State Highway 20, and while Police initially signalled for the vehicle to stop, it fled the area at speed.”
At this stage, the Police Air Support Unit was responding in the area.
“The unit on the ground did not engage the fleeing vehicle, instead Eagle continued monitoring this vehicle’s movements,” Inspector Ellwood says.
“The vehicle was observed travelling along State Highway 20 and State Highway 16 towards Massey.”
Eventually the vehicle was spiked by Police on Te Atatū Road and it came to a stop a short time later on Royal View Road.
“Five occupants were taken into custody by Police without further incident.”
Inspector Ellwood says Police have since laid charges in the matter.
A 19-year-old female will appear in the Manukau District Court this morning, while a 15-year-old male is due to appear in the Manukau Youth Court in relation to this incident.
Three others, aged between 13 and 17, have been referred to Youth Aid.
“This is a pleasing outcome in that we have been able to hold the alleged offenders to account a short time after the initial incident occurred,” Inspector Ellwood says.
“I would also like to acknowledge the quick report of the theft to 111 so that Police could respond to what had taken place.”
Police continue to encourage those who sees something happening now to call 111.
