FOOD EXPERTS SHARE THEIR TOP TOPS TO MAKE YOUR FESTIVE TREATS LAST LONGER

HelloFresh

The festive period is in full swing and chances are most families will be left with a fridge full of festive leftovers after the big day.

With BBQ meat to spare and vegetables aplenty, many parts of your festive feast are often unnecessarily left to go to waste, due to either being thrown away or not stored correctly.

So what’s the best way to store your surplus foods?

Experts at HelloFresh have put together their top storage tips that will leave your Christmas leftovers fresh and tasty for at least a few days and a week or more in your pantry.

Say goodbye to fiddly and hard-to-use cling wrap and hello to these earth-friendly ideas.

Beeswax wraps

Not only are these wraps much better for the environment, they’re also fantastic for keeping your food fresh for longer. Made from cloth that has been coated with beeswax which makes the cloth rigid, they’re perfect for covering bowls and wrapping around food.

Food storage containers

Airtight containers are renowned for their durability and versatility in the kitchen. They will keep your food fresher for longer and you can neatly refrigerate your leftovers, transport it easily in any bag and reheat and even serve food out of some.

Carrots get mushy when they become dry. To keep them moist and tastier for longer, store them in a container in the crisper at 3–4 degrees. An airtight container in the fridge will do the trick if you don’t have a crisper.

Reuse glass jars

All types of food can be stored well in glass jars with resealable lids, and they are widely available. Just make sure to wash and sterilise them before using them to preserve food.

Salad leftovers can be easily kept in jars. Additionally, the resealable top ensures that spills won’t happen.

Plate on bowl method

Simply put the leftovers in a bowl with a plate on top and store in the fridge. This is a great method and you don’t need to buy anything new.

Silicone lids

The stylish alternative for piling a plate on a bowl. When these coverings are positioned on a smooth surface, they immediately form an airtight seal. Silicone lids are heat-tolerant and available in a range of sizes. You can microwave them to avoid leftovers from spitting everywhere.

It’s important to remember that vegetables such as potatoes and onions love dark, cool and dry places. In order to prevent them from both releasing moisture and spoiling faster, store them in your pantry.
