Framework too late for many events

Tasmanian Labor
  • Greater clarity for events sector welcomed
  • Government did not prioritise development of events framework
  • Unrealistic to think the framework will allow major events to proceed in December
  • The events framework released today by the Tasmanian government will do little to help many in the state’s event sector.

Labor Leader Rebecca White said while it’s a welcome step forward for the sector, it’s come too late for many.

“Many of Tasmania’s premier summer events have already made the decision not to proceed.

“These events have long lead times, sometimes up to 12 months.

“It’s unrealistic to think that an events framework released at the end of October will somehow enable these events to go ahead from the start of December.

“Peter Gutwein must have been aware of the lead time required for music festivals, cultural events and the major food and wine extravaganzas that Tasmania has become so famous for.

“But despite the long list of cancelled events, the government did not prioritise development of an events framework that would allow them to proceed.

“While it’s great news that events like the Sydney to Hobart yacht race and other sporting events will now be able to proceed, it’s going to be a very different summer this year without the iconic festivals and events Tasmanians have become so familiar with and proud of.”
