Goulburn Mulwaree Council will look to access grant funding to trial accessible parklets and pod seating in the Goulburn and Marulan CBDs, along with further street furniture, laneway art and lighting and pedestrian safety measures.
An expression of interest has been lodged to the NSW Government Streets as Shared Spaces Fund, where Council can apply for up to $500,000. The project would come on the back of completion of the final block of tree planting and artificial grass in Auburn Street, with installation of flag poles also now complete. Christmas banners have now been installed to build excitement for the holiday season.
“The Streets as Shared Spaces program gives us the opportunity to provide places for social interaction in our CBD” said General Manager Warwick Bennett.
“We are looking to trial some really fun, innovative ideas such as seating pods with communal library boxes where people can drop or borrow a book. Other seating pods would be solar enabled, with charging outlets for technology, and these would be placed near Belmore Park which I’m sure would be a popular spot for those grabbing a coffee or having a meal.”
“Another idea we have submitted as part of the EOI is to make further use of our tree spaces in Auburn Street by placing a powder coated metal grid at each of these between the sidewalk and the tree, and to then place seating here. This will make improved use of this space, without any effect on car parking.”
If successful with the expression of interest Council will be required to submit a formal application by 11th February 2022, with successful projects to be announced in March 2022, and to commence from April onwards.
