Funding boost helps Broome athletes reach their full potential

  • Broome Sports Association awarded $75,000 for athlete talent development program
  • Assists regional Western Australian athletes who aspire to reach their full sporting potential
  • Up to 40 Broome-based athletes have the opportunity to participate in a year-long holistic sport development program, thanks to a $75,000 funding boost from the McGowan Government.

The funding, awarded to the Broome Sports Association through the Regional Athlete Support Program, is helping to facilitate development in the athletes’ chosen sports, as well as prepare them for higher representation.

There are currently 34 athletes participating in the Broome Talent Development Program across 10 different sports.

As part of the program the athletes participate in strength and conditioning, Pilates, nutrition and injury prevention.

In 2021, the Regional Athlete Support Program (RASP) was strengthened with $3 million of funding secured over three years.

The RASP is a State-wide regional talent development network that supports regional based athletes, coaches and officials, which promotes development and progression along the sporting pathway from their home environment.

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:

“The McGowan Government is investing in regional athletes, coaches and officials through providing top-quality training and development opportunities.

“You only need to look at the recent selections for the 2022 Commonwealth Games to see that some of our greatest athletes come from WA’s regions.

“This funding will not only help regional athletes to excel in their chosen sports, it will also help

keep young people in their home towns and ensure they can access the same opportunities as their city counterparts.”

As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

“There are many talented athletes in Broome and this funding will help support them to go further.

“By investing in programs like this, we are helping build the potential of children and young people.”

As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D’Anna:

“I have always been passionate about making sure our local talent have the opportunities to thrive and to be on par with others in the State.”
