The South Australian Government is partnering with the Australian Government to build greater drought resilience in South Australia’s grain, livestock, vegetable, and dairy industries through a Future Drought Fund program.
Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud and SA Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development David Basham said the Farm Business Resilience program will give farmers the skills needed to protect against future drought.
Minister Littleproud said drought is a risk that all farm businesses in Australia face.
“The program will improve the skills of farmers to plan for and manage their farm business through times of drought,” Minister Littleproud said.
“It looks to the long term, helping farm businesses prepare for drought before times get tough.
“Farmers will be supported to work on their farm business plans and will have access to experts and one-on-one professional advice on their plan.”
Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development David Basham said around 210 South Australian farmers will have access to subsidised learning and development opportunities tailored to their needs.
“The Farm Business Resilience Program supports farm businesses to build their strategic management capacity, assisting them to become better prepared for and more resilient to the impacts of future drought,” Minister Basham said.
“Drought always has been and will continue to be a part of primary production in South Australia.
“By developing and updating business plans to manage the impacts of drought and weather events, farmers will be better placed to make decisions during, and recover from, such events in future.
“This is another example of the Marshall Liberal and Morrison Coalition governments working in partnership with local communities to deliver better outcomes for regional South Australia.”
The Farm Business Resilience program will be led in the key sectors by AusVeg SA, SA Dairyfarmers’ Association, Livestock SA and Grain Producers SA.
Minister Littleproud said the program will roll out in every state and territory.
“We’ve partnered with state and territory governments, building on their programs and on-ground relationships. This is just the first stage. We’ve committed $60 million to extend the program to reach even more farmers across Australia.”
