Future Melton Hospital another step closer

Melton Hospital is a step closer after the State Government today announced Western Health as the operator of the future facility.

City of Melton Mayor, Cr Lara Carli, welcomed the news as another milestone towards making the hospital a reality.

“This is an exciting development towards building Melton Hospital and we’re very grateful to the State Government for taking this significant step,” Cr Carli said.

“A hospital in Melton will transform everyday life and health outcomes for our residents. It will provide access to the healthcare our residents need, and it will also create local jobs.

“We agree with the State Government that as one of the fastest growing areas in Australia, our community deserves a world class 24-hour public hospital on their doorstep.

“We’re growing at such a rapid rate and the need for a public hospital is absolutely critical. Not only are existing health services under pressure, but travel times to get to surrounding hospitals are getting longer and longer.”

The announcement follows the State Government’s $2.4 million budget commitment earlier this year to develop a business case for the hospital.

Council is working with the State Government to acquire land and will continue to advocate for a start date.

“This is great news and we continue to seek a commitment from the State Government to begin construction by 2022,” Cr Carli said.
