Future submariners experience Navy life

The winners of the third National Submarine Competition and Tour have enjoyed a rare opportunity to experience life as a Royal Australian Navy submariner during a tour of HMAS Stirling.

The 12 lucky winners from across Australia went behind the scenes at Australia’s largest naval base, where submariners showed them the world-class technology and training they would experience as crew of a Collins Class or Navy’s future Attack Class submarines.

Minister for Defence Personnel Darren Chester said the competition provided a unique opportunity for Australians to learn more about a future career with submarines or learn more about the Navy.

“A career in the Royal Australian Navy is incredibly rewarding personally and professionally, and sets people up with some great skills and experiences for the rest of their lives,” Mr Chester said.

“The winners of the competition got to engage with current submariners to learn a little more about the benefits of a career in the Navy, as well as Australia’s submarine capability.

“Submariner careers offer a particularly exciting experience, with crew that are a close-knit team that rely on each other, while being part of a modern military organisation operating advanced vessels and aircraft to keep Australian waters safe.

“Congratulations to our winners, some of whom may be our future submariners.”

The winners were selected based on their responses in 50 words or less to the question: ‘what qualities have you got that would make you a great Navy submariner?’

Entries for the 2022 competition will open late 2021.
