Investment into WA cancer research has received a substantial boost with more than $200,000 donated to our Cancer Research Giving Day, held on World Cancer Day, Friday 4 February 2022. The total was then matched by a group of generous donors bringing the overall amount to just over $400,000.
Our CEO, Ashley Reid, said despite another uncertain start to the year in a global pandemic, the generosity of the WA community was astounding.
“We would like to thank the community for helping us raise an astonishing amount for our annual Cancer Research Giving Day,” Mr Reid said.
“We are also incredibly grateful for the support from our generous matching donors, allowing every dollar raised during the 12-hour appeal to have twice the impact for the research of tomorrow.
“Donating to research gives hope. It allows researchers to innovate, try completely new ideas and approaches. It gives researchers the instruments they need to improve diagnostics and treatment outcomes.”
These funds will allow West Australian researchers to continue their ground-breaking work.
We must continue to fund our world-class local researchers to improve diagnosis, detection and treatment for every cancer and every West Australian affected by it.
Survival rates for some of the most common cancers including breast, melanoma and prostate cancer is more than 90 per cent, and the overall five-year survival rate for all cancers is more than 70 per cent.
This, in part, is thanks to research that informs improvements in screening, diagnosis and treatment.
However, stopping cancer starts by understanding it and research is the key to unlocking the answers we need for a cancer free future.
