Get vaxxed to enjoy Queensland racing

Minister for Education, Minister for Industrial Relations and Minister for Racing The Honourable Grace Grace

A bonanza of summer racing lies ahead for Queenslanders, with even more prize money available thanks to changes made by the Palaszczuk Government.

Racing Minister Grace Grace said Queensland’s strong health response had allowed large racing events to continue, and attracted more to the state, but warned that once Queensland hits 80% double dose people will need to be vaccinated to attend them.

“Thousands of Queenslanders will be heading to the Sunny Coast this weekend, for the start of the TAB Queensland Summer Racing Carnival,” Minister Grace said.

“There will be more than $20 million in prize money and bonuses when Australia’s most exciting Summer Racing carnival returns, with all eyes on Corbould Park to kick-start nine weeks of action-packed racing.

“The Carnival will reach a thrilling conclusion with The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions. Queensland’s richest raceday will take centre stage with $10 million in prize money and bonuses up for grabs.

“The Golden Greys continue to go from strength-to-strength, and the return of the Inter Dominion Championship in 2023 – the first time it’s been here since 2009 – is another marquee event Queenslanders have to look forward to.

“It’s imperative, however, that participants and punters alike, roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated so they can continue to enjoy these big events across the state.

“Once we hit 80%, only vaccinated people will be able to attend.”

Minister Grace confirmed further increases to prize money, infrastructure grants, and animal welfare will be delivered in the New Year.

“This is made possible by the Palaszczuk Government’s changes to fund 35% of the Point of Consumption tax back to the industry.

“It has enabled Racing Queensland to not only bring forward funding from July 2022 to January 2022, but to increase it from $7.5 million to $15.3 million.

“The Palaszczuk Government’s continued support of racing has seen a significant increase in economic contribution across the state.

“With more than 12,500 Queenslanders now employed in racing – an increase of more than 1,000 over the past two years – the Queensland racing industry continues to make a significant contribution to the state’s economy.

“It’s all part of our $14.5 billion COVID-19 Economic Recovery Plan.

“I’d ask everyone who wants this growth to continue to get vaccinated, and to do it today.”
