Getting Territory Students Work Ready

NT Government

The Territory Labor Government is building the Territory workforce of the future.

Vocational Education Training (VET) in our schooling system is key to unlocking our future generation of highly skilled individuals, and is a unique pathway for students to combine academic learning with hands on experiences.

Expanding the way NT Education delivers VET programs across the NT, especially in remote locations was a key recommendation of the Secondary Education Review.

Due to the Territory’s diverse needs, more pathways to work opportunities within the secondary education system have been identified as a core recommendation of the review.

As such, the Territory Labor Government has established a Territory first on-country VET program prototype that will deliver more VET courses for more students and provide more on-country accommodation.

The Remote Training Hub is now open and located 130 kilometres west of Alice Springs at the Tjuwanpa Outstation Resource Centre.

Tjuwanpa outstation provides services to the local Ntaria community, with 16 Ntaria school students being the first to participate in the Territory Labor Governments landmark on-country training hub in partnership with Community Development Providers.

This Central Australia prototype will be used to inform other VET delivery models in regional and remote areas of the Northern Territory.

An additional eight on country positions have been created to support the expansion of VET programs in Central Australia.

New Trainer Assessors and a Remote Industry Pathways officer have been employed by the Territory Labor Government to support the delivery of this new program, with recruitment underway for career advisory and training coordinator roles.

The Tjuwanpa Remote Training Hub includes facilities such as: Accommodation, workshops, warehousing, commercial kitchen, training rooms, offices and an art centre. This collaboration will provide remote secondary school students with greater access to accredited training in industry areas such as construction, hospitality, tourism, automotive, construction, community services and conservation and ecosystem management.

Students from government and non-government schools across the Central Region are able to access the training offered at the Remote Training Hub, including the accommodation facilities.

Integrating more VET courses into our remote schools will allow students the opportunity to explore their passion and aptitude in practical, real-world applications, leading to more students entering the workforce.

So far, the Territory Labor Government has already funded 206 VET programs in 40 secondary schools across the Territory. This number is set to grow.

Quotes attributable to Chief Minister, Eva Lawler:

“The Territory Labor Government is opening new doors to get our students work ready.

“The new on-country VET program will enable students to stay in or near their communities and acquire the skills, knowledge and opportunities to thrive in the workforce of the Northern Territory.

“We want to provide all Territory children with the training and education to achieve whatever they choose to be, and it is the Territory Labor Government which will enable them to get there.”

Quotes attributable to Minister for Education, Mark Monaghan:

“Building the workforce of the future means we need all students to have access to quality resources that give them opportunities.

“This new remote training prototype means students in remote Central Australia have the same training opportunities as those in our urban centres.

“Only a Territory Labor Government will continue to invest in education – unlike the CLP who can’t decide on what education system is best for our kids.”
