Gleadell Street Market reopens to keep our local food businesses thriving

The Gleadell Street Market will reopen this Saturday 16 May to continue providing fresh produce for our community.

Following the State Government’s announcement on 11 May to ease coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions, we have decided to reopen the market from Saturday 16 May from 7am to 1pm.

Markets are considered an essential service, as they are an important source of fresh produce for our community and support our local businesses.

“We’re so glad to be able to reopen the market – this space is so important on so many levels to people”, said Yarra City Council Mayor, Cr Misha Coleman.

“There will still be a range of measures in place to protect people’s health and safety though – both for the stallholders and for shoppers. We’re asking everyone to please adhere to the physical distancing requirements and to follow the directions of staff.”

To make shopping quick and easy some traders are offering a preorder collection service. If you would like to place an order in advance, you can contact traders directly and collect it from the stall holder on the day.

“Thank you to the Gleadell Street Market stall holders for your patience during this really difficult time. We encourage those that are able, to shop at the market and support local businesses”, Cr Coleman said.

What safety measures will be in place?

Physical distancing and other safety measures will be in place to protect shoppers and local traders.

This includes:

• Providing hand sanitiser and hand washing facilities.

• Limiting the numbers of people in the market at any one time to maintain a 1.5 metre distance.

• Managing queues to allow ease of access.

• Using contactless payments and avoiding cash.

• Asking customers to not handle produce and wash thoroughly before eating.
