More than 1300 scientists from around the world will converge on Sydney in September to explore electrochemical solutions to some of society’s biggest challenges, from clean energy and climate change to preventative healthcare.
The 77th Annual Meeting of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) will be held in Australia for the first time from 6-11 September 2026 at the International Convention Centre Sydney.
The meeting, themed Electrochemistry for the New World, is one of the world’s largest gatherings of electrochemistry researchers and will bring together more than 1300 delegates from across the globe.
The Hon. Emily Suvaal MLC, NSW Parliamentary Secretary for Trade and Small Business, will speak at the conference opening.
UNSW Scientia Professor Justin Gooding, Co-Chair of the ISE, said electrochemistry was playing an increasingly important role in tackling some of the defining scientific and technological challenges of our time.
“This is the biggest electrochemistry conference in the world, and this is the first time it has been held in Australia,” Prof. Gooding said.
“Many of the current challenges of our time from alternative energy, preventative healthcare and climate change, involve electrochemical solutions.
“Bringing more than 1300 researchers from around the world to Sydney gives Australia an extraordinary opportunity to showcase our scientific expertise, build new international collaborations and accelerate the translation of research into technologies that can make a real difference.”
The scientific program will cover areas including alternative and renewable energy, hydrogen production and utilisation, fuel cells, next-generation batteries, environmental monitoring, electrocatalysis and electrochemical sensing technologies for medical diagnostics.
The meeting will feature 16 symposia alongside plenary lectures, tutorials and presentations bringing together fundamental and applied electrochemistry.
Prof. Gooding said electrochemistry was often an unseen enabling technology behind innovations with enormous potential impact.
“Whether we are talking about storing renewable energy in better batteries, producing clean hydrogen, detecting environmental contaminants or developing sensors that can identify disease earlier, electrochemistry is central to many of the technologies we will need in the coming decades,” he said.
“Holding this meeting in Australia for the first time is also an opportunity for our researchers and students to connect directly with many of the best electrochemists in the world.”
The 77th Annual Meeting of the International Society of Electrochemistry will be held at ICC Sydney, Darling Harbour, from 6-11 September 2026.
