Glenn Maxwell Calls Time On Victorian State Career

Cricket Victoria congratulates Glenn Maxwell on an extraordinary career following his decision to retire from first-class and List A cricket for Victoria, effective immediately.

Maxwell has also confirmed his retirement from T20 international cricket for Australia, bringing to a close a remarkable career spanning more than 16 years.

One of the most dynamic and entertaining cricketers to represent Victoria, Maxwell made his One-Day Cup debut in the 2009/10 season before making his Sheffield Shield debut in 2010/11.

Throughout his Victorian career, Maxwell was part of four Sheffield Shield-winning campaigns (2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2018/19) and two domestic One-Day Cup titles (2010/11 and 2018/19).

A product of Fitzroy Doncaster Cricket Club, Maxwell announced himself on the domestic stage in February 2011 when he smashed the fastest half-century in Australian domestic one-day cricket history, reaching the milestone from just 19 balls against Tasmania and surpassing David Hookes’ previous record.

Just weeks later, Maxwell scored his maiden Sheffield Shield century against South Australia at the MCG, finishing unbeaten on 103 in just his second first-class appearance.

In November 2017, Maxwell produced one of the great innings in Victorian Sheffield Shield history, scoring a career-best 278 from 318 deliveries against New South Wales at North Sydney Oval, including 36 fours and four sixes.

His outstanding domestic performances helped launch an international career in which he became one of Australia’s most influential white-ball cricketers, contributing to ODI World Cup victories in 2015 and 2023 and the 2021 T20 World Cup triumph.

Renowned for his fearless batting, inventive strokeplay, off-spin bowling and exceptional fielding, Maxwell has entertained Victorian cricket fans for more than a decade while inspiring a generation of young cricketers with his unique approach to the game.

Cricket Victoria General Manager of High Performance, Graham Manou, paid tribute to Maxwell’s contribution to Victorian cricket.

“Glenn has been an outstanding contributor to Victorian cricket for more than 16 years and is undoubtedly one of the most naturally gifted players to have represented our state,” said Manou.

“His ability to influence games with the bat, ball and in the field has been extraordinary, and his willingness to play with such freedom and confidence has made him a unique figure in Australian cricket.

“Beyond his performances, Glenn has been part of a hugely successful era for Victoria, and we thank him for everything he has contributed to the program.”

Cricket Victoria CEO, Nick Cummins, thanked Maxwell for his contribution to Victorian cricket and the wider game.

“Few players have entertained cricket fans quite like Glenn. His creativity, fearless approach and ability to produce the extraordinary have made him a fan favourite in Victoria and around the world,” said Cummins.

“On behalf of Cricket Victoria, I congratulate Glenn on an outstanding state career and thank him for everything he has contributed to Victorian cricket, both on and off the field.
