Professor Bob Lingard’s new edited collection, Globalisation and Education with Routledge, is in Stephen Ball’s Education and Social Theory Series. The book includes a lengthy introductory essay by Professor Lingard on contemporary theorising about globalisation, about education policy and concerning the complex imbrications between the two. The argument documents the need to move beyond both methodological nationalism and methodological globalism in policy sociology in education in the context of the contemporary ethno-nationalist backlashes in some nations against neoliberal globalisation. This argument is applied to how we ought to understand education policy and research it in contemporary times. This includes what is seen as the constitutive work of policy in relation to ‘scale-craft’ and ‘space-craft’, emergent elements of statecraft, that is the creation of new scales and new spaces of policy making and enactment. The book is concerned with the new cartographies of power that surround both.
Professor Lingard is a life member of the Australian Association for Research in Education, a life member of the Queensland Teachers’ Union, and a life member of the Institute of Modern Art. He is also a Fellow of the Australian Council of Educational Leaders and of the Australian College of Educators. He is also a Gold Medal winner of the Australian College of Educators.
