Going armed so as to cause fear charges in Surfers Paradise, QLD

A man has been charged with going armed so as to cause fear and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle following an incident in Surfers Paradise overnight.

Officers were called to accommodation outside the intersection of Hanlan Street and Surfers Paradise Boulevard around 1.30am today, August 1, following reports a man was allegedly armed with several knives.

The alarm was raised by a nearby security guard who allegedly observed a taxi driver and four male passengers having a verbal argument regarding a fare.

Investigators will allege upon the group alighting the taxi, the driver got out and brandished a knife at the men, who fled on foot.

A short time later, it will be further alleged the man drove the taxi into one of the men at the intersection of Cavill Avenue and Surfers Paradise Boulevard, causing one man to be thrown onto the bonnet of the vehicle. Investigators will also allege the man reversed the taxi, revved the engine and drove at speed into another member of the group, narrowly missing him.

All members of the group sustained minor injuries only.

Police tracked the vehicle to nearby Macintosh Park where the taxi driver was arrested without incident on the side of the Gold Coast Highway.

The 35-year-old Surfers Paradise man has been charged with one count each of going armed so as to cause fear and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. He received police bail and is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on Monday August 15.
