Government must engage in NAPLAN review

  • NAPLAN review time after a decade of stress and concerns
  • The
Legislative Council tonight passed a motion calling on the Government to
consider the merits of a review of the National Assessment Program Literacy and
    Numeracy schools testing system (NAPLAN).

    Shadow
Minister for Education and Early Years Josh Willie said in the absence of
leadership from the Federal Government, the Victorian, New South Wales and
Queensland Governments have agreed to band together and conduct their own
    ‘breakaway’ comprehensive review.

    “Parents,
students and principals have raised concerns over the merits of NAPLAN for a
    decade,” Mr Willie said.

    “In that
time results have not substantially improved, while pressures on students have
    increased each year.

    “NAPLAN
data published on the MySchool website is being used as a school rating tool
rather than a measurement of student progress.

“Labor is extremely disappointed that so far Jeremy Rockliff has refused to engaged in the timely review of NAPLAN so we are pleased our motion today may force him to reconsider.”
